Close To Destiny

Women’s Fiction with Paranormal Undertones
Date Published: February 20, 2015

Kat is struggling to get her life back together and put her anorexia and suicide attempts behind her. She must expel the mysterious inner demons that have plagued her for years, and patch up the rocky relationship with her fiancé.

But when she arrives in London for a therapeutic art project, an encounter with an enigmatic woman named Destiny upsets her views of reality and plunges her into a quest for the truth about her past—an astonishing past that reaches back well before her birth.

After midnight, Destiny leads Kat to extravagant parties at an eerie luxury hotel and introduces her to a man who seems to know her better than she knows herself. Kat tries to convince herself this is all part of a strange dream. But as evidence mounts suggesting otherwise, Kat is torn between fascination and fear.

Will Kat run away, or will she seize the fleeting opportunity to change her life and find true love?

Alternating between the reality of day and the mystery of night, Close to Destiny by best-selling author Adria J. Cimino is a magical realism story of déjà vu and righting past wrongs that will delight fans of authors like Sarah Addison Allen and Erin Morgenstern.

Review

Kat was so multi-dimensional and showed so much growth. She really went through a lot in this story.

I love the DESTINY aspect of this book. No matter how much you try to fight it, sometimes what is meant to be will be.

This book will definitely keep you on your toes! It’s very emotional and deep, yet uplifting at the same time.

No Reason For Insanity is a tale of intrigue, concentrating on the thoughts and actions of Haszard, the narrator. It is a whodunit with dark, and occasionally light humour, using lateral thinking as Haszard works through the bizarre murders to discover links. There is tension and danger throughout, plus a desperate fight for survival.
Intrigued by the bizarre events surrounding the murder of a friend, Haszard is asked by the family to look in to the matter. Against the advice of his friends, he begins making enquiries, and is disturbed when he realizes that it may well be someone he knows.
As progress is made, further events occur, endangering the life of Haszard and his friends, and he is forced to delve into the deepest recesses of his resourcefulness . . .
Excerpt
Walking away from the house I said nothing but had a feeling something sinister was afoot. Gerry, a non-swimmer who was terrified of water, would never go near a swimming pool, yet he’d been found in one. Wrong. Everything about this was wrong. Gerry used to joke that he only ever showered because the water in the bath was too deep, therefore him being found in a swimming pool bordered on the surreal.
Why, though, would someone want to murder a man like Gerry? He was probably the nicest man I’d ever met, never having a bad word to say about anyone. I’d never heard of him being involved in any kind of conflict—nothing at all. In fact, the same went for the entire family. Sylvia was a church-going lady who involved herself with charity work, raising money for disadvantaged children, seldom going out to restaurants or the like, choosing to remain at home where she organized dinner parties for friends.
Alec’s only confrontation was on the rugby field, the young man spending the majority of his time with fiancée, Loretta, the couple enjoying their weekends in the great outdoors, rock-climbing, canoeing, and pony-trekking.
Donna, who’d not long turned twenty-one, was probably the more outgoing member of the family, although she seldom frequented nightclubs, preferring to see live bands instead. I knew that she’d recently split with a long-standing boyfriend; nevertheless, that was an amicable parting and therefore couldn’t be put forward as a motive for anyone to wish harm on the family, especially her gentle father.
The way that I saw it, there was no reason anyone should want to harm Gerry, and certainly not his loving wife Sylvia or their children, Alec and Donna.
“Haz, are you all right?” Sabrina asked as we entered the car.
I shrugged. “I’m just bothered about what Loretta said. Something’s not right about all this. We’re seeing Vicky tomorrow night, so I’ll ask her what she thinks and if there’s anything she can tell us.”

Review

I really did think that this author showed a lot of imagination in writing this story.  I enjoyed that I understood the characters motivation throughout the novel. I didn’t disagree with a lot of the actions.
There is also definite chemistry and a steam factor to this novel. I think that the looks on the cover models faces really goes hand in hand with this.

Gloria lives in southwestern Ontario Canada, with her hubby, her two teenage kids and a slightly larger than normal (or believable) cockapoo named Spike.  She was lucky enough to meet the dude of her dreams at a drunken toga party while at college, two days before she turned nighteen, and they’ve been together ever since.  She believes in romance, and that attraction doesn’t have to die off.  It can survive everything from children to middle age drama.  She loves to laugh with her hubby and believes in keeping a sense of humour above everything else.  Gloria has always written, everything from poetry to short stories to a column in a local paper.  Her favorite is to write romance, because everyone deserves that feeling, that belief in a happily ever after.
A child of an extra-large blended family, with two brothers, two sisters, two dads, one mom, one step monster, twelve grandparents and so many aunts uncles and cousins that her hubby after twenty years still can’t keep track of them all.
Being surrounded by that many voices growing up taught her how to block out what she doesn’t want to hear.  To this day that skill has come in very useful, as she gobbles up four books a week. From romance to fantasy even textbooks- nothing stands in her way when she wants to read.
She draws and collects crafts like other women collect shoes (which she also collects but that’s another story).  When she isn’t wearing her hat as mom, wife, writer, sister, artist, daughter, crafter, doggie mommy, friend, she can be found sitting around a campfire with an eclectic group of people.
She is a self professed geek.  Her geekdoms include Buffy the Vampire Slayer (or anything Joss Whedon does), zombies, star wars, the princess bride, game of thrones, the walking dead and so many more that she can’t possibly name them all.
Overall she is a scooter riding, wookie hoodie wearing, fun loving woman who refuses to grow up.

EXCERPT
“Corinne Treyton?” I hear an intimidating voice shouting my name.
I hold Melissa’s hand and walk slowly down the steps, coming face to face with the scariest looking man I’ve ever seen – tall, fully bearded, tattoos covering his arms and neck, and a leather vest that says Angels Warriors on it. Instantly, I sag in relief and let go of Melly’s hands. I rush forward, wrapping my arms around this big guy’s waist and sobbing.
“You came,” I choke out.
“Darlin’,” he says gruffly, holding me tight to him. “Reaper, you check the house, find whatever you can, if you can. These f***ers are slimy. Zippo, get the sister. We’re outta here.”
“You can’t take these kids!” my foster father shouts at him.
I stiffen, scared that I’m going to have to stay here. “That’s funny, because we are,” the man holding me says calmly.

In the Belly of the Elephant

Non Fiction / Memoir
Date Published: December 18, 2013

Everybody needs to run away from home at least once. Susan Corbett told people she was out to save the world, but really she was running — running from her home as much as to anywhere. Like many women, she was searching for meaning to her life or for a good man to share it with. In Africa, she hoped to find both.

Compelling and compassionate, In the Belly of the Elephant is Susan’s transformative story of what happens when you decide to try to achieve world peace while searching for a good man. More than a fish-out-of-water story, it’s a surprising and heart-rending account of her time in Africa trying to change the world as she battles heat, sandstorms, drought, riots, intestinal bugs, burnout, love affairs and more than one meeting with death. Against a backdrop of vivid beauty and culture, in a narrative interwoven with a rich tapestry of African myths and fables, Susan learns the true simplicity of life, and discovers people full of kindness, wisdom and resilience, and shares with us lessons we, too, can learn from her experiences.

Review

It takes no time at all for Susan Corbett to hook her reader with her words and her story in general. I was invested from the get-go.  This novel is a great example of the struggles a person can go through and the ability to overcome your past and your struggles and move on and build something from it. Susan Corbett’s writing style is smooth and effortless. I felt like I was in her head and that is a huge testament to her writing ability. Powerful and Emotional and Inspiring.
A writer, community organizer, and consultant in program management, micro-enterprise development, family planning, and HIV/AIDS education, Susan Corbett began her community development career in 1976 as a Peace Corps Volunteer, working in a health clinic in Liberia, West Africa. In 1979, she joined Save the Children Federation as a program coordinator for cooperative and small business projects in Burkina Faso.  In 1982, Susan returned to the States where she has worked with local non-profits in drug and alcohol prevention for runaway youth, family planning, homelessness prevention, and immigrant issues.
Susan has traveled to over 40 countries in Europe, Africa, Asia, the Pacific and Caribbean, and Central and North America and has lived and worked in ten African countries over the past thirty years (Uganda, Tanzania, Mali, The Gambia, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Mauritius, Tunisia, Nigeria, and Liberia). She lives in Colorado with her husband, Steve, her sons, Mitch & Sam, and her dog, Molly.

Gifted Thief

Urban Fantasy

Orphan. Runaway. Thief.
Since the moment I was ripped from my mother’s womb, I’ve been an outcast amongst my own kind. The Sidhe might possess magical Gifts, unbelievable wealth and unfathomable power but I don’t want a thing to do with them. I ran away from their lands in the Highlands of Scotland when I was eleven years old and I’ve never looked back. I don’t need a Clan. I’ve got my own family of highly skilled thieves who mean more to me than any Sidhe ever could.
Unfortunately for me, the playboy heir to the Moncrieffe Clan has something I desperately need. To get it back, I’m going to have to plunge myself back into that world, no matter what the consequences may be. I suppose it’s just as well I have sense of humour. I think I’m going to need it.
By bestselling author Helen Harper, Gifted Thief is the first book in the Highland Magic series.

Excerpt
From Chapter One
You have to do bad shit to get ahead. Taylor had told me that a million times and for a long time I’d bought into it. After tonight, however, things were going to be different. A new leaf and a new me. That was what I was planning.
I’d been thinking about it for a long time but since I’d received the letter in elegant, handwritten script demanding my appearance at the Sidhe court, I felt I had no choice but to step up my plans to vamoose out of the city. I didn’t want anything to do with those bastards. Not unless it meant ripping them off. Frankly, I’d rather head down to the Lowlands – and the Veil – than venture near the Clanlands.
At least Taylor had promised that my final hurrah was going to be a straightforward job. ‘In and out,’ he’d said. ‘The place will be empty.’
‘You know I’m leaving after this one,’ I reminded him. Not that it was likely it would have slipped his mind but with Taylor sometimes certain points bore repeating.
‘Of course, of course! As if I could forget.’ His eyes took on a knowing look that I chose to ignore. ‘You’ll miss it though. You won’t get many thrills from tramping around the countryside.’
‘It’s not tramping around the countryside. It’s mountain rescue. I think saving lives will be thrilling enough.’
He grimaced at that. ‘You’ll be bored.’
I simply smiled back. We’d had this conversation often enough in recent weeks. My mind was made up and even he couldn’t change it.
‘I’ll always be here,’ he said. ‘If you do want to come back, that is.’
I hugged him impulsively. ‘I might not come back to work but I’ll always come back. You’re my family.’ I meant every word. We’d had a few rough times over the years but who hadn’t? Taylor had been there for me when no-one else was, even if his motives weren’t always pure. I worried about him more than he’d ever know.
He looked abashed at my heartfelt words and ran an awkward hand through his hair. It was no longer the carroty mop he had when I first met him all those years ago. Now it was more silver, far closer in colour to my own locks, which still drew curious looks and the odd question about my ancestry, even amongst the Clan-less underbelly. For the most part I shrugged them off.
It was a very long time since I moved in Sidhe circles. I crossed the road to avoid passing close by any of my kin, no matter how distantly related they were. And one of the reasons I was leaving Aberdeen was because they’d contacted me.
It wasn’t that I was afraid of what they might do if they got hold of me, although that was a part of it. I just wanted a quiet life. My childhood with the Sidhe was little more than a distant memory; in fact sometimes I felt as if it had happened to someone else.
I ignored the gossip mags and whispered rumours about what each Clan was up to.  I lived in the underclass, far away from them. I didn’t care whether Aifric remained Steward and was therefore still in charge, or which man Tipsania Scrymgeour was currently stepping out with. I didn’t even care that her father, the Bull, appeared to be making more money than Bill Gates. The Sidhe could spend their days worrying about politics, jockeying for position and doing whatever they could to rise above other Clans. I only cared about me and mine. And none of mine were Sidhe. Or Clan.
I tested my kit, adjusting the harness at my back to ensure it was secure, and skirted round the back of the building. It might be the middle of the night during a bank holiday weekend but I still needed to be circumspect. It would be sod’s law if I got nabbed on the very last day I spent as a career criminal. Tapping my forehead three times with my index finger to signal to my waiting crew, I gave one last look around then sprang up.
My fingertips curled easily around the first ledge. Despite the typical Scottish chill, I was barefoot. It made it far easier to gain purchase on the smooth glass surface of the towering bank. I also admit that I rather enjoyed it when I glanced down and caught a flash of the sparkly nail varnish adorning my toenails. It felt appropriate for this job; we were, after all, going after some more sparkles ‒ albeit of the more expensive kind.
Clambering up with fluid, nimble ease, I made fast work of my ascent. Beads of sweat were only just appearing on my brow when I reached the assigned floor. Piece of cake. I tightened my grip with my left hand, using my right to reach behind and unclip the glass breaker that was hooked to my belt.
It was a nifty piece of kit, designed to help trapped motorists break out of their cars. While I’d never heard of anyone actually using one to save their own life, I found mine particularly useful. It was a gift from Taylor when I graduated from simple manipulation tactics and dull look-out posts to full-blown thief. The others might scoff at its hot pink colour but I’d had it for seven lucky years and it had never let me down. I might wear black to stay camouflaged against the night sky but that didn’t mean that everything I carried had to be boring monochrome too.
Leaning back as far as I could, I swung it into the centre of the pane of tinted glass, shattering it instantly. Thanks both to the glass breaker’s and the window’s design, all the shards of glass fell inwards just as I wanted.
Flashing a satisfied smile to my inner thief, I heaved myself inside with a leap, landing far enough in to avoid catching my skin on any of the dangerous broken pieces. I pivoted round and grinned, curtseying at the now-gaping hole. Then I checked my watch. Less than ninety seconds from pavement to entry. That was impressive, even for me.
Without wasting another minute, I unclipped my harness and tested the nearby wall. The plaster seemed sound enough so I pulled out my tiny drill, made a hole in the wall and carefully inserted the climbing wire. I gave it an experimental tug; it would hold. Less than thirty seconds later, I was lowering the rope out of the window and whistling down softly.

A woman in a man’s world…
CPA Rebecca Walker wields a hammer and saw with skill, but it’s like fighting tooth and nail to prove to her chauvinistic father that she’s capable of managing the family construction business. Romance is a luxury Rebecca can’t afford.
A man with secrets…
Thanks to his past, romance isn’t in Sean Kinkaid’s future, so when Rebecca proposes ‘friends with benefits,’ Sean agrees. It’s the perfect scenario until love sneaks in—and Sean’s secrets tear them apart.
Believe…
But Rebecca has a secret too, one she fears Sean will never accept. It will take intervention from an unlikely source to convince these two lovers they have the one thing neither of them ever expected to find … a love to believe.
Excerpt
“Sean?”
Rebecca’s voice poleaxed him and a powerful wave of awareness washed over him, several things manifesting at once: She had the power to slay him with a single word, she sounded shaken and scared, and this must be serious because she hadn’t initiated contact with him even once since their split. A quick flash of their brief, but passionate, coming together at the gazebo stabbed into his gut, as did her statement before she retreated. ‘I can’t do this,’ she’d said, and he assumed she meant she couldn’t cheat on Nate. Which didn’t negate the fact that she’d been as involved in the kiss as Sean had been, but, he reminded himself for the thousandth time, just because he and Rebecca shared history and a powerful physical attraction didn’t mean that Nate hadn’t managed to win her heart, or at the very least, her loyalty. In either case, she didn’t belong to Sean. He needed to remember that.
“Sean? Are you there?”
“You sound upset.” He heard sirens through the phone and his heart damn near stopped beating as icy fear sluiced over him. “Are you okay? Have you been in an accident?”
“No, but I need you, Sean.”
His heart started pumping again and relief flooded through him. “Where are you, sweetheart? I’ll be right there.”
“No, no. Its—I need you, but I’m not asking—I need a lawyer, Sean. I’m about to be arrested.”
Comprehension doused him like an unexpected cold shower. She didn’t need him, she needed his legal expertise. Ouch.
He pinched the bridge of his nose. “Arrested for what?”
“Resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.”
A surprised laugh escaped him. “Are you serious?”
“Can I count on you or not?”
“Jesus, yes. Of course. Are you still at the scene of the…uh…crime?”

Featured Excerpts
ANTIHERO by C.J. Pinard ~Excerpt~
I answered the door to see Talia standing there in a white flowy-looking sundress and those damn cowboy boots that drove me crazy. Her hair was down, the wild curls falling around her face. As usual, she didn’t have on much makeup, but her pretty pink lips were all shiny. I felt myself stiffen in my pants.
She walked in and put her arms around me and smiled. “I’ve missed you.”
I chuckled, kissing the top of her head. “You just saw me this morning.”
“I know,” she laughed. “Are you ready?”
I nodded, patting myself down to make sure I had my keys, phone, and wallet. Check, check, check.
We walked out into the parking area, and when I saw her car parked next to mine, I said, “Your car is locked, right?”
She rolled her eyes and smiled. “Yes, dad.”
I grabbed her hand and kissed it. “Don’t sass me, or I’ll have to spank you.”
“Promise?” she asked, a mischievous glint in her pretty eyes.
We walked to the restaurant we’d agreed on earlier. It was only a few blocks from my house, and it was a nice night. She planned on staying over, so her coming to meet me here just made sense.
I held her hand as we walked, the warm night not too hot and not cold, just perfect. She told me some more about her mom and a younger brother who had received a college scholarship and was living somewhere out west to get his degree. I talked to her about my mom and stepdad and told her I wanted her to meet them one day. That made her smile. I finally opened up about my visit with Harper Mathis and the job prospects she’d given me. She looked so happy, I tried to memorize her face.
“Ellis Anderson?”
We turned around slowly when a male voice said my name with an authority I recognized. Two Tampa P.D. officers were standing there, looking stern.
“Yes, sir?”
The larger of the two walked over and pulled out a pair of handcuffs. “Sorry, son, but you’re under arrest for the assault and battery of Justin Silver.”
“Fuck,” I muttered. I didn’t even need to ask. That pussy bitch had pressed charges.
“Oh, my God! No, please don’t,” Talia cried, seeming to know why I was being put in cuffs. “That thug attacked us first!”
The shorter of the two officers paused for a minute, but only said, “Ma’am, please step away, we have to take him in.”
Talia was crying now, dammit. The officer took mercy on her and handed her a card. “He’s being taken here. He can probably make bail, but call that number and they will let you know.”
She took the card but kept looking at me as the cops walked me to their waiting car, putting me into the backseat. I gave no resistance, as I knew they were just doing their job. I could only hope to claim self-defense. There go my chances with that job.
Fuck my life…
I turned around to see Talia standing in the street with the glare from the streetlamps illuminating the tears streaming down her cheeks. I swallowed the lump in my throat and shook my head. If that shitbag is out and I’m going to jail, I’m gonna find his ass when I make bail and he’s gonna face the wrath of LT.

The Biker’s Secret Torment by Lisa Ladew
I stalked down the darkening campus sidewalk, my thoughts on overdrive. Why was it, that spending years away from him had done nothing to lessen the impact those dark eyes and that brooding smirk had on me?
I’d turned in my Human Physiology final, then nearly swallowed my tongue when I walked out of the exam room into the lobby of the building and saw him on the tiny TV in the corner. They’d only showed him from a distance, but I knew it was him. Only one member of my dad’s MC wore a beanie pulled low, swaggered like that, and filled out a Mad Marauders MC cut like that. My heartbeat had tripled as I rushed to the TV and turned the sound up, my eyes plastered on the fiery Viking helmet and sword in the center patch. I clenched my teeth as I listened to the reporter’s human interest bullshit. Before he disappeared into the clubhouse, I realized he wasn’t limping. What in the hell did that mean?
The piece had only lasted another few seconds, but after I saw it I had run out onto campus, shaking with anger for him. They didn’t use his name, but some smartass reporter had dug up his past and was now trying to use it to further her career. I wondered if she had contacted him yet. Asked him for an interview. If she had, I wondered how that fuck you had tasted to her.
I took a left between two buildings in the fading evening light, practically running towards my dorm. But when I got there, I couldn’t go inside. What if Sloane was in there? I couldn’t fucking deal with her right now. Her special bitch senses would start tingling the second I walked in the door and she would pounce on me, knowing I was upset. No way. I had one more final tomorrow, and then I was done with school for almost a month. When I came back I would have a new roommate. If I never talked to Sloane again, that would be fine with me, and I really couldn’t deal with her now.

DOG – By Bella Love-Wins
Kim POV.
What had happened couldn’t be changed. Mom was dead, and I was there, in a random safe house that no one really lived in, with five bikers.
One of whom was irresistibly hot.
Once I’d gotten dressed in the only pair of pajamas I’d brought, I settled onto the bed and looked around the room while I dried my hair. The bedside clock said that it was nearly one in the morning. I didn’t feel tired at all, my limbs instead full of a sensation that couldn’t be pinpointed. Nervousness? Fear?
A soft knock on the door made me self-conscious.
“Yes?” I asked as I pulled a knitted blanket over my legs. I was wearing short shorts I’d had since freshman year in high school, and they didn’t exactly cover up much anymore.
“It’s Kane.”
I swallowed hard. “Come in.”
He opened the door hesitantly, hanging back with his hand on the knob.
“You can come in,” I repeated. It was odd to see him waiting for my approval to do something. I’d pegged him as the kind of guy who was always working hard to show his status. Or maybe that was just the way he was in front of the other members of the club.
“I’m sorry about all of this,” he said, walking over to the bed and sitting just a foot away.
“It’s not your fault.” I glanced at him and then looked away quickly. That softness in his eyes was something new. It was way too much to handle. God, he was so hot. Any time he was close to me my entire body would practically be humming. It was as though his presence alone made me come alive in a way I never had before.
What would he do if I made a move? Kane was anything but my usual type. And yet that heat couldn’t be denied.
Suppose I was to have sex with him. It would only be one time. Hell, maybe it would even be good for me. It would get my mind off of the horrible circumstances of my life. Not only that, it would show Kane that I was just as capable of calling the shots as he was.
The temptation to reach over and grab his face or his crotch were still building up when he turned to me.
“Your dad just wants to protect you.”
I sighed. This was so not the conversation I’d been looking for. “He’s done a shitty job of it so far. Just ask my mother.”
Surprisingly, Kane pursed his lips and nodded. “That’s a legit way to feel.”
I crossed my arms, suddenly no longer in the mood to make a move on him. “What’s going to happen next?”
“We’ll keep moving you around. Make sure we don’t stay in one place for too long.”
“Until when?”
“Until this thing with the Arroyos Bandidos is settled.”
“I have school,” I spat.
“Doesn’t your survival come first? You can’t go to school if you’re dead.”
I bit my lip. Damn him. Damn him and those smoking eyes. Damn him and that rough stubble, that square jaw, those hard biceps popping out from underneath the hems of his shirt.
Before I knew it my hand was on his shoulder. He didn’t move, just looked at me, his gaze boring a hole into my face. Eager to act before I chickened out, I leaned forward and brushed my lips softly against his. He opened his mouth in a welcome as I kissed harder, tasting the salt and reveling in the softness of his tongue when it slipped out between his lips.
I shifted my weight, letting the blanket drop to the floor. Finally having decided to just go for it, I raised up onto my knees. He responded by grasping my waist and swinging me around to straddle his lap, never breaking the contact of our lips for an instant.
His hands trailed up to the back of my head, winding their way through my damp hair. When I turned my face to the side to get at a better angle for kissing I pushed my weight forward, pressing my crotch against his. A deep growl that seemed to come up from the very earth traveled through Kane’s body and escaped his mouth only to make my own lips hum with the reverberations.
I broke off the kiss with a heavy gasp, keeping my face still close to his.
“This is just sex,” I whispered.

Taming The Biker by Cassie Alexandra.

It was the sound of my cell phone buzzing that woke me from a dead sleep. Groaning from the sharp pain in my temples, I opened one eye and reached clumsily for the phone. As I did, an arm encircled my waist and pulled me backwards into warm, solid maleness.
Shocked, I stiffened up. Who in the hell is that?!
“Relax,” murmured a gravelly voice against my neck. His mouth moved up and he nipped my earlobe with his teeth, making me shiver. “Whoever it is can wait, but as you can probably tell… I can’t.”
My eyes wide open now, they darted around the darkness. I was definitely in my hotel room, which brought me no relief. I couldn’t just slip away.
He pressed his hips against my bottom and there was no mistaking the raging hard-on rubbing against my cheeks. “I need to be inside you, babe. You feel me?”
“Yeah,” I squeaked. I definitely felt him.
Rough fingers reached up and grabbed my breast. He tugged on my nipple. “God, you’re sexy,” he murmured.
I can’t do this, I thought, my cheeks burning in shame. I didn’t do one-night stands. Not ever. But, last night had been my sister’s wedding and obviously, I’d had far too much to drink.
Taking a deep breath, I pried the man’s fingers from my breast, and scooted out of his reach, pulling one of the blankets with me.
“Hey, where you going?” he asked, trying to reach for me again.
Covering myself, I quickly stood up and turned on the lamp. When I finally got a good look at the muscular, tattooed man lounging in my bed, I groaned at my own stupidity. In the back of my mind, I knew it was him. I just didn’t want to believe it.
I sighed. “Taylor.”
He rubbed the side of his cheek. “You look surprised.”
“Do I?” I mumbled, frustrated. I wasn’t sure which made me angrier – the fact that I’d had sex with him, or the fact that I couldn’t remember any of it.
Taylor patted the bed. “Why don’t you get back into bed?”
“No.”
He tilted his head to the side. “Why not?”
“I just… can’t.”
With a hard, feral grin, he shoved the blanket away from his hips, exposing his impressive hard-on. “You sure you don’t want to try?”
Seeing such a masculine, ripped body naked and fully cocked, my womanhood spasmed with desire. “You’re… not making this easy,” I admitted.
Taylor rolled over onto his back. “Good. Now, get on, Lauren. You know you want to. I see it in your eyes,” he said huskily.
At a loss for words, I was unable to look away from his perfectly, chiseled body. He was certainly a beautiful specimen and any fantasy that I might have ever had about Taylor Adams couldn’t possibly measure up to the real deal.
He reached over and grabbed a condom that was sitting on the nightstand. “If you want, we can use one of these, this time.”
Shocked, I pried my eyes away from his hips. “We didn’t use a condom?”
His eyes narrowed. “You said you were on the pill.”

Excerpt
Oftentimes when you lose someone close to you, the experience can be transformative. In grief, we find a side of ourselves that we didn’t know existed, a compassionate side, an empathetic side. Some people, however, are able to present a meticulously planned facade. Their grief isn’t real. Behind the mask, and the tears, and the sadness is a gluttonous, greedy, cold heart. These people are entitled, elitist, and you should be wary of them at all times.
Their intentions are malicious, calculated, and dangerous.
In the world I grew up in, people wore masks, but the truth was always wading beneath the surface. At their very core, they were always the same person, virtuous or vile, moral or malevolent, never a mix of both. Noble people can be dishonest, but corrupt people are only ever honest when it is for their own benefit. And that is the hardest lesson I have had to learn.
Mob, Mafia, Organized Crime, The Black Hand, or my favorite . . . The Syndicate. It’s said these racketeering groups have come a long way since the Prohibition Era, and I would agree. They are more cutthroat, devious, and treacherous with the end game. More control is acquired, more lives are ruined, and once your bridge with them is burned, it can never be rebuilt.
Sometimes they right a wrong with their own form of justice, and their way of payback prevails. But, sometimes greed and vengeance cloud their vision, and they are so off the mark, it’s just evil.
