The Wild Ones is about 7 young wild horses left on their own. How they survive and are eventually gentled by the men of the Circle bar X ranch. The horses talk amongst themselves but not to the humans in the story. It is told from one of the mare’s point of view. This is her first novel written from a picture of two black/grey horses on a calendar and what her father taught her.

Review

I will be honest, I wasn’t sure what I was going to get going into this book. It’s told from the perspective of horses and that had the ability to go wrong, but I was pleasantly surprised by the way Gladys Swedak was able to connect me to them just as she would human characters. It is so unlike anything I have read recently, and that is a good thing. I can get bogged down feeling like I’ve been reading the same thing over and over and that was not the case here. Real problems and legitimate issues these animals are dealing with whether it be with their circumstances or each other. Smooth writing.
