Review

This book brought us an imaginative world with great characters.
Great flow with action to keep you flipping pages, it was quite clever.
I loved the way that the author was able to give these characters major obstacles, keep them endearing, and not let the reader lose sight of what this is all about.

“Every Third Night” is an eye-opening yet poignant story that is
set in a busy, dehumanizing and unyielding New York City residency program
in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1984. It brings the reader into the real
world of medicine at a time of limited supervision and brutal duty hours
through the vantage points of young physicians enduring stressful conflicts
and volatile relationships.

Protagonist and chief resident Jimmy Zito seemingly has it all- brilliant
clinical skills, handsome, a talented teacher, and a gorgeous girlfriend to
boot- but a troubled past and a rash of new conflicts leave him struggling
to survive in this, his last month of training. He desperately tries to
guide his fellow residents through their own personal traumas, but is not
nearly as well equipped to handle the pressure as others might think,
especially considering the toxic and exhaustive work schedule, unchecked
aberrant behavior of attending physicians, and the highly competitive and
emotional demands of Ob-Gyn.

Intern Henry Deluca grapples with the consequences of a horrific surgical
complication that he feels responsible for. Co-chief resident Greta
Greenberg struggles with her personal dilemma in a busy abortion clinic.
Best friend Mike O’Rourke is driven to madness by an unreasonable superior’s
callousness concerning a dying patient with ovarian cancer. And Kim Clark,
Jimmy’s occult but obvious love interest, is at wits end after constantly
being tortured by her sadistic Chairman. Jimmy’s ultra-needy girlfriend and
stubborn father do not make things any easier. The intertwined subplots all
mesh together and come crashing down when an unexpected, dramatic and
haunting mishap leaves the program reeling and Jimmy’s life forever
transformed.

Confronting Toxic Practices Against the Advancement of Women

Christian Living, Women’s Issues

Date Published: November 24, 2020

photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

Without question, having competent women in leadership can certainly
enhance the vitality of any organization. Sadly, too often women are not
given equal opportunities and are left doubting their sense of self and
their abilities.

In Eve, Where Are You?, Dr. Nicole Davis uniquely evaluates bias practices
within one specific organization: the Christian church. You’ll learn
why many women are discouraged, emotionally absent, leaving churches, or
considering giving up religious pursuits altogether. Within these pages, Dr.
Davis thoughtfully contemplates the scriptural significance of God’s
creation of Eve; compares women’s leadership advances in the
marketplace and church; and shares real-life stories and perceptions about
women in leadership offered by present-day church leaders.

As a conflict coach and resolutionist, Dr. Davis boldly addresses possible
causal effects of toxic practices against women and then offers strategic
solutions and guidance to both women and church organizations to facilitate
reconciliation, creating opportunity for the church to regain influence and
effectiveness in our culture.

Crisp, aggressive, and truthful, this study presents a call to action for
women who want more, men who want more for women, and church organizations
seeking to embrace internal transformation against gender bias in the
Christian church. Also available in Spanish.

About the Author

Dr. Nicole Davis is a wife, mother, pastor, Christian life coach, social
science researcher, and conflict resolution practioner, with over 20 years
of professional experience. Her areas of research interest include gender
inequality, organizational leadership, women empowerment, and family
dynamics.

Dr. Davis believes there is a huge distinction between a woman’s
calling, which is determined by God, and a church’s doctrine about the
utilization of women, which is a cultural decision predominantly determined
by men.

Dr. Davis advocates for churches of all denominations to begin having open
dialogue about systemic oppression and alienation against women.  Those
who show no regard for women’s callings or competency levels. Women
need to be developed and commissioned to serve at the highest levels.

Dr. Davis examines the deep-rooted conflict concerning what God intended
when He created Eve in the Garden of Eden. She asks poignant questions
inviting women to explore how they see themselves based on God’s
original plan for them.

Piddle Diddle the Widdle Penguin and the Synchronous Fireflies of the Great Smoky Mountains – @RABTBookTours

Adventures of Piddle Diddle, the Widdle Penguin

Children’s Book

Date Published: April 6th 2022

Publisher: Jan-Carol Publishing, Inc.

What animal can hold a child’s attention better than a mischievous, cunning penguin?! Piddle Diddle, the Widdle Penguin, is such a penguin. Despite her small size, she can be an example to children. Size is an obstacle only if you let it be. Penguins are some of the most entertaining animals on the planet! Come and join Piddle Diddle, the Widdle Penguin, and her family as
they enjoy the amazing synchronous fireflies in the Great Smoky Mountains of
Tennessee!

Review

Piddle Diddle is just as sweet and cute as the name would imply. She will capture the attention and hearts of young readers right away as they read about her mighty and determined personality and the great adventures she gets up to.

About the Authors

Wayne A. Major and Ralphine Major both grew up in Corryton on their
family’s dairy farm in rural East Tennessee. Always surrounded by lots
of animals, they developed a love for them at an early age. Both went on to
graduate from The University of Tennessee with degrees in Business
Administration. Wayne majored in Marketing and is retired from the State of
Tennessee. Ralphine majored in Office Administration with a teaching
certification, and is retired from the Tennessee Valley Authority. Though
she has never had a journalism class, she uses her God- given talent as a
contributing writer of a weekly true human-interest column for The Knoxville
Focus ( http://www.knoxfocus.com ).

Years later, one Sunday morning Wayne was sitting in the choir at Wallace
Memorial Baptist Church in Knoxville, Tennessee, and something unexpected
happened. He was listening to a sermon about David and Goliath that was
directed toward the youth. Wayne heard a voice say, “You need to write
children’s books.” He even turned to see where the voice came
from. After hearing his story, Ralphine committed to the project as well.
While the brother/sister duo had helped teach kindergarten classes at church
and admired the children’s eagerness and willingness to learn, this
was a new venture and a step of faith.

Getting published did not happen overnight, but it was worth the wait
getting to work with Publisher Janie Jessee, Graphic Designer Tara Sizemore,
and the staff of Jan-Carol Publishing, Inc. The authors believe the great
chemistry they have with Illustrator Teresa Wilkerson is because she grew up
on a dairy farm in East Tennessee also. Wayne created the character, Piddle
Diddle, the Widdle Penguin, which is a registered trademark. Ralphine
vividly remembers how excited Wayne was when he shared about hearing a voice
that Sunday morning in the church choir. She is happy to be a part of this
adventure with Wayne and remembers well that Sunday night when they first
talked about this journey that started in the church choir! The authors are
proud to partner with two generous donors who have helped to put hundreds of
books in the hands of children. God does work in mysterious ways! Throughout
this process, Wayne and Ralphine have felt God’s hand guiding them and
realize how important it is to wait on God’s timing. They hold firm to
Proverbs 3:6 (KJV): “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall
direct thy paths.”

The War Girls – @RABTBookTours @BookBuzznet @JulieRoweAuthor

Historical Fiction, WW1

Date Published: June 28, 2022

photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

During the Great War, in a German-occupied Red Cross hospital in Brussels,
Belgium, there are three British nurses who will risk everything to save the
lives of those in their care. These are the stories of The War Girls.

Saving the Rifleman – British Red Cross nurse Maria Hunt lives in daily
fear that the German soldiers who regularly inspect her hospital will
uncover her secret: she helps wounded British soldiers escape German
hands.

Enticing the Spymaster – Judith Goddard is hiding in plain sight. A dual
citizen with family ties to Belgian royalty and the British military, she
works as a Red Cross nurse in a German hospital, learning what she can, ever
fearful her true allegiance will be discovered.

Aiding the Enemy – Rose Culver is in grave danger. For months the Red Cross
hospital head nurse has been aiding Allied soldiers caught behind enemy
lines, helping them flee into neutral Netherlands. It’s only a matter of
time until she’s caught.

The War Girls is composed of three previously published novellas. This is
the first time they have been published in one volume.

Excerpt

Chapter One

Brussels, Belgium

November, 1914

“Maria.”

Alarm rippled across Maria’s nerves, jerking her attention from the
supply record book she was writing in.

Her teacher, mentor, and matron of the hospital on Rue de la Culture stood
at the window, staring out at the street, her back straight and stiff.

“Rose?” Maria took a step toward her, but Rose’s voice
stopped her before she could take another.

“Please take an inventory of the bandages in the closet on the second
floor.” Her words were spoken with a deliberateness that should have
been reassuring. It wasn’t. The other woman held herself too still,
too rigid. “We’re about to have another friendly
visit.”

“Germans?” Maria whispered, dread tightening its coils until
she could barely breathe. “Again?”

Regular soldiers didn’t make her too uncomfortable; they appreciated
the nurses who looked after their wounded countrymen, and they knew they
could end up at this hospital and in her care. But the officers were another
thing altogether. They looked at Maria and Rose as if the two of them were
convicted criminals of the worst sort.

As if they were dirty.

Rose nodded.

“Lord preserve us.” The words slipped out before Maria could
stop them. “When will this madness stop?”

Rose turned then, a rueful smile on her face. “I wish I knew. Go now
and stay out of sight if you can.”

“But—”

“I’ll be fine. Dr. Geoff is still here. He’s as irritated
with all these inspections as we are. They’re a constant interruption,
and we have little enough time for our work as it is.”

Herman Geoff was a German doctor, but he treated Rose and even Maria with
the utmost respect. His uncle was a high-ranking officer. Very high. As long
as Dr. Geoff supported them, they would most likely remain safe.

If they did nothing to irritate or anger the local German troops. Something
Maria feared she’d already done.

She rushed to the back stairs and climbed them quickly. Rose would be safe.
The second daughter of minor gentry, she had demonstrated time and again her
diplomatic skills were more than up to the task of dealing with arrogant,
suspicious German officers.

Maria had none of those skills or family background.

The second floor was filled with bedrooms, now used as wards for their
patients. There was also a room where the nurses slept—Rose, herself,
two Belgian nurses and one German nurse who worked with them. A closet near
the back stairs had been converted into a storage area for bandages and
other medical supplies.

Perfect for a woman to hide in while waiting for their German visitors to
leave.

She opened the door, prepared to enter…

But the closet was already occupied—by a soldier complete with pack,
sidearm and rifle. The weapon wasn’t what snared Maria’s gaze
and held it.

His eyes were green. A brilliant emerald green.

Her breathing stalled as she stood in the doorway and stared into those
wide, pale eyes and at the blood spattered across his face and
uniform.

His British uniform. In a Belgian hospital full of enemy German
soldiers.

Good God.

Voices floated up the back stairs a few feet away and she opened her mouth
to caution him.

Before she could utter a warning, before she could blink, his hands reached
out, grabbed her, and yanked her into the closet, pulling the door closed
behind her.

Fear and shock crushed her throat as she found herself pressed against the
soldier’s body, one of his hands over her mouth, the other a steel
band behind her back.

She couldn’t move and the closet was so dark it might as well have
been a tomb. Blind and restrained, the unfamiliar scents filling her
nostrils took over her senses.

Mud, blood, and man.

***

Lieutenant John Bennet held the woman in his arms tightly enough to keep
her from crying out, but not enough to harm her.

He’d hoped to find someone to help him, preferably a nurse, but this
wasn’t how he’d anticipated meeting such a woman—staring
into her frightened face then pulling her into a dark closet. He
couldn’t even tell her she was in no danger from him. Any noise would
likely be overheard by the men now standing on the other side of the
door.

He held himself still despite the pain from his wound and the unfamiliar
weight of the woman in his arms. How long had it been since he’d held
anything so soft? Weeks? Months?

He sucked in a breath and the scent of evening flowers filled his head,
driving out all others. His cock stirred in response to the feel of her
curves along his flank. Her chest rose and fell erratically under his arm as
she tried to breathe through what must be a terrifying situation.

Yet there were no tears, no sobs, or cries.

He tore his focus from the delights of her body to consider her movements
for a moment. She’d stopped struggling for the most part and now stood
relatively docile in his arms.

Maybe she realized how dangerous his predicament was. If she was a nurse,
she might feel some sympathy toward him, some care.

Energy surfaced from some unknown well inside him, heating his muscles. He
couldn’t give up hope, not now. He had to find a way out of Belgium, a
way to report what he’d seen. There were more lives at risk than his,
thousands more. Including the nurse in his arms.

A man was giving orders in German in the hallway, from the sound of it,
only a few paces from the closet door. Orders to search the hospital for the
British soldier. Orders to find and detain for questioning the second
British nurse. The woman John no doubt held in his arms.

The woman now in as much danger as he.

Poor girl. It was one thing to tend wounded men in no shape to offer
offensive behavior, but quite another to be taken captive in a dark closet.
He was lucky she hadn’t screamed herself hoarse or fainted.

Somehow, he needed to communicate his lack of intent to harm her.
He’d been told this hospital was a place of safety for British
soldiers caught behind German lines. The last farmer who’d sheltered
him just outside of Brussels told him the matron of this hospital could help
him, had already helped many others like him. She might even be able to
supply fake identity papers and an escape route out of the country.

Warm, soft, and sweet-smelling, the woman in his arms could be the key to
his survival. And what he knew was the key to Britain’s defense.

His spine solidified, transforming into steel.

She didn’t know it, but he was prepared to kill to protect her.

“Great action, well-told, and authentic with all the nuances and
spirit of small town Texas. Don’t miss it.” -Lone Star Literary Life
Reviews

In this enigmatic follow up to his critically acclaimed debut novel The
Cuts that Cure, Arthur Herbert returns to the Texas-Mexico border with this
chilling mystery set amidst a small town’s bloody loss of
innocence.

Amoret, Texas, 1982. Life along the border is harsh, but in a world where
cultures work together to carve a living from the desert landscape, Blaine
Beckett lives a life of isolation. A transplanted Boston intellectual, for
twenty years locals have viewed him as a snob, a misanthrope, an outsider.
He seems content to stand apart until one night when he vanishes into thin
air amid signs of foul play.

Noah Grady, the town doctor, is a charming and popular good ol’ boy.
He’s also a keeper of secrets, both the town’s and his own. He
watches from afar as the mystery of Blaine’s disappearance unravels
and rumors fly. Were the incipient cartels responsible? Was it a local with
a grudge? Or did Blaine himself orchestrate his own disappearance? Then the
unthinkable happens, and Noah begins to realize he’s considered a
suspect.

Paced like a lit fuse and full of dizzying plot twists, The Bones of Amoret
is a riveting whodunit that will keep you guessing all the way to its
shocking conclusion.

Review

The story moves along quickly with no unnecessary padding, the characters are likeable and believable and the relationships ring true. This is a good, not too heavy mystery that gives the reader plenty of ups and downs and mystery to keep them flipping pages.
Gifted writers have the ability to bring words to life whereas the readers feel as if they are watching a movie. Arthur Herbert’s book did just that for me. Add in the great narration and it made that even more so.

About the Author

Arthur Herbert was born and raised in small town Texas. He worked on
offshore oil rigs, as a bartender, a landscaper at a trailer park, and as a
social worker before going to medical school. For the last eighteen years,
he’s worked as a trauma and burn surgeon, operating on all ages of
injured patients. He continues to run a thriving practice in New Orleans
where he lives with his wife Amy and their dogs.

Review

I enjoyed this book, very much, and was equally surprised by it.
Though it starts a little slow, if you stick with it a nice, easy to read story comes along. It is written quite well andthe plot is easily followed and full of twists and turns.
The main characters are very interesting and fun to read about. There was good character development that added to the story.

Smartphones Don’t Give Hugs – @RABTBookTours

A Guide Out of Loneliness

Nonfiction

Date Published: 04-22-2022

photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

Do you have a thousand Facebook friends and yet you feel alone?

In a world saturated by instant gratification, we have forgotten how to
foster lasting human connections. Although technology allows us to keep in
touch with people who live on the other side of the world, loneliness is at
an all-time high. Why is that? Well, for one thing, smartphones do not give
hugs.

Dr. H. David Burstein takes an in-depth look at loneliness, its modern
causes, and how it may be alleviated. He has found that loneliness is
inextricably woven into the fabric of our human condition. Our need for
connection highlights the biological fact that we are, first and foremost,
social creatures. Feelings of loneliness act as a light on an emotional fuel
gauge, alerting us to our need for accessing personal or social
energy.

This thorough investigation into our yearning for social connection offers
many solutions that will empower us to show up more powerfully in order to
fulfill this basic human need. And these solutions begin with an
introspective excavation of ourselves, our emotions, and our search for
purpose and meaning.

Compelling, insightful, and thought-provoking, this is a go-to guide for a
more fulfilled life.

Review

Too many of us or the people who surround us are guilty of the things in this book. We live in a world that is built more and more on instant gratification. We don’t know how to wait or appreciate the little things.
I liked this a lot. It’s a great guide that is quite eye-opening. I liked the layout and how easy it was to follow. Well done.
